Dr. Sadhana Nayak : Founder, ‘AAROHA -The Voice Clinic and Centre for Vocal Empowerment’
I am Dr. Sadhana Nayak, founder of India’s first voice clinic and centre. I am a laryngologist and vocal medicine specialist, voice coach, and communication and performance consultant.
As a voice
coach and communication consultant, I specialize in voice training for business
and corporate speakers, entrepreneurs, professionals, newscasters, television
anchors, actors, and singers, empowering them to maximize the potential of
their voice, to communicate, and perform with impact.
As a vocal
medicine specialist, I provide voice therapy and treatment for vocal disorders
and problems in professional and artistic voice users, viz. speakers, singers,
actors, voice-over, and dubbing artists. I offer the same level of specialized
care and expertise, not only to professionals and performers but to any
individual who is seeking vocal training or treatment.
When I was training to be
an E.N.T surgeon, I could never have imagined that I would someday combine my
medical expertise with my love for the performing arts. After completing my M.S
[Master of Surgery] in E. N.T, from Seth G.S Medical College & K.E.M
Hospital in Mumbai, my training in Hindustani classical singing and my love of
the performing arts, motivated me to specialize in ‘Laryngology & Care of
the Professional Voice’ at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, U.S. A.
My training with Dr. Sataloff, a leading laryngologist, and his team of acting
and singing voice specialists at Thomas Jefferson University, equipped me with
the specialized skills to deal with the complexities of working with singers,
actors, and professional vocalists with vocal injuries and disorders.
I am further certified as
a voice coach and teacher in New York. It helped me combine the artistic
aspects of training the voice with scientific and healthy vocal techniques.
On my return to
India, I founded 'AAROHA-The Voice Clinic and Centre
for Vocal Empowerment’, India’s first voice clinic and centre.
I have been
honoured with prestigious national and international fellowships, including the
Fulbright and Commonwealth fellowships. I am the first specialist from India to
be appointed to the editorial advisory board of ‘Voice and Speech Review', a
scholarly journal of Voice in the U.S.A.
I have been
invited as visiting faculty at drama, film & music departments, and
educational institutions in India and the U.S.A. I have designed and
implemented training programs for corporate organizations, television networks,
theatre groups, and NGOs.
As a medical voice
specialist, I developed expertise in the treatment of vocal problems and
disorders. As a voice coach, I honed my skills for professional voice training.
As someone who studied the art of singing, I developed a sensitive ear for
subtle changes affecting a performer’s voice. I’ve successfully combined these
skills to offer the best voice training, therapy, and treatment.
I believe that
all creative processes and artistic endeavours are sustained by a foundation of
scientific technique. An expressive and powerful voice, used for performance
and communication, has to be a healthy and optimized voice. The premise of my
work is to provide performers, professional vocalists, and individuals seeking
vocal training and therapy with a strong foundation in vocal health and
scientific vocal technique so that they can fully explore the power of their
voice for effective communication and artistic expression.

Motivation behind AAROHA
When I qualified as an E.N.T surgeon, I could never have imagined that I would someday combine my medical expertise with my love for the performing arts. From as far back as I can remember, I loved music as well as biology and science. While pursuing my medical studies, I trained in Hindustani classical and Hindi film vocal music.
While I was
studying E.N.T, our understanding of the professional and artistic voice was
limited. Vocal performers, especially singers with voice problems, often
continue to have vocal limitations following conventional treatment. By the
time I had qualified as an E.N.T surgeon, advances in the field of technology
helped us to understand the voice better and provide effective treatment for
voice problems.
My love of the vocal arts and my background in music motivated me to specialize
in "Laryngology & Care of the Professional Voice." I received a
fellowship to train with Dr. Robert Sataloff, a laryngologist [voice
specialist] and an opera singer, heading a world-renowned voice department at
Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, U.S.A. My training with Dr.
Sataloff and his team of acting and singing voice specialists equipped me with
the specialized skills for therapy and treatment of singers, actors, voice-over
artistes, and other vocalists with voice problems and disorders.
I further
trained as a certified voice coach with renowned voice teachers Catherine
Fitzmaurice and Dr. Brian Gill in New York. It helped me combine the aesthetic
and artistic aspects of the voice with scientific and healthy techniques.
As a clinician and surgeon, I developed a keen eye for pathology in the
vocal folds. As someone who studied the art of singing, I developed a sensitive
ear for subtle changes affecting vocal expression, range, and flexibility in a
performer’s voice. I’ve successfully combined these skills to offer the best
possible training and treatment for professionals and artistic voice users.
Looking back, I
can see how all my diverse passions and professional training have come
together in my work of enhancing, restoring, and treating the voice. And my
approach to the voice continues to evolve as I work with patients and clients
from different walks of life, seeking to access and explore their uniqueness
and self-expression through the voice.
Principal
qualities in a doctor
To start with, doctors must develop
and master all the necessary skills, expertise, and practical experience in
their area of specialization. Patience and compassion for your patients,
passion and commitment to your work, and the ability to love and enjoy your
work are important qualities in a doctor. Keeping yourself updated with the
latest developments in the field and continuing to hone your skills is
important and essential, as the medical field is constantly evolving.
The guru mantra for emerging women entrepreneurs
Have a long-term goal and vision, be committed and persistent, update yourself with the latest developments in your field, and keep growing and evolving. Pursue your dreams and never give up. Success is always just around the corner.
Success over struggles in life, as a woman entrepreneur
The initial years were challenging because I was the first E.N.T surgeon in India to specialize in "Laryngology and Care of the Professional Voice" and it was a rare specialization. But my love of the performing arts and music, and my vision to make this specialization available in India, motivated me to pursue it diligently. I spent many years creating an awareness of this new and unique field through lectures, workshops, and awareness programs. But I never gave up. If you are passionate about something and have a vision, pursue it and never give up. You can achieve anything.
Looking back, I can see how all my
diverse passions and professional training have come together in my work of
enhancing, restoring, and treating the voice. And my approach to the voice
continues to evolve as I work with patients and clients from different walks of
life, seeking to access and explore their uniqueness and self-expression
through the voice. It has been a long journey. But every moment of this journey
has been worth it.
