Could you share with us any memorable award you have received in your professional journey?

I am fortunate to taste success everyday when I help people who get in touch with me. It's extremely rewarding. In 2023, I was privileged to receive the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Health Award for Excellence in Counselling Psychology and Mental Well-Being on Doctors' Day.

What inspired you to pursue a career in psychology?

As a child, I was very observant, and questions about human behavior always intrigued me. My journey into psychology began with the book "Introduction to Psychology," which ignited a lifelong passion within me. From that moment on, I knew I was destined to explore the depths of human behavior, psychology and mental health. The intrigue of understanding why people behave as they do, coupled with the transformative power of positive psychology, captivated me. I digged deep into gathering knowledge from books and researches. My compassionate, altruistic and empathetic personality drives me to help individuals navigate their lives more effectively. I enjoy harnessing the power of optimism, imagery, self-confidence, assertiveness, and value-driven living. Psychology offers the incredible potential to not only address mental health issues but also elevate lives to their highest potential.

With an empathetic nature, excellent listening skills, knowledge of the subject, an empirical approach, and experience of successfully helping individuals across the globe, there has been no looking back.

How do you manage your own mental health and prevent burnout, given the nature of your work?

My job, like any other, is also result-driven. It's the result that keeps me going. When someone enters to meet a psychologist for the first time, there is conflict, confusion, stress, sadness, and much more. But across the table, there is just one thought: willingness to help. I always applaud people for being brave enough to take the first step; the rest becomes my responsibility. I feel extremely blessed to be able to be a catalyst in so many people's journey to fulfillment and happiness.

I believe this optimistic approach or perspective towards my work keeps it going. On hard days, I do practice what I preach. It's only human to get exhausted; you need to have frequent breaks; follow hobbies; time with your partner is therapeutic; connecting with friends is rejuvenating. It's extremely important to build a support system for yourself while you are already working on resilience.

What are the key aspects of being a practicing psychologist?

The first key aspect of my work is its purpose and impact on people in distress. I work to understand, diagnose, and treat mental health issues, helping individuals improve their well-being and cope with various life challenges. My work can have a profound impact on a person’s life, providing meaningful and life-changing support.

The second aspect is having the skills and knowledge and also being continuously updated. Being a psychologist requires extensive education and training. Scientific research-based approaches and practical knowledge, along with very strong skills in empathy, compassion, communication, analysis, and problem-solving.

Emotional Engagement is the third key aspect of my work profile - to provide a safe and comfortable place. I engage deeply with the other persons emotions and personal histories, requiring emotional resilience and professional boundaries. A good memory is vital. And the work gets emotionally taxing unless you take care of yourself too.

Last but not least is Problem-Solving. I actively work to solve complex emotional and psychological issues, developing tailored treatment plans and interventions for each case. To be in a continuous solution mode requires agility of mind, excellent listening and evaluation skills, and optimism. It also requires being sensitive while at the same time ensuring well-being. Being a psychologist involves rigorous professional training and a commitment to helping others through challenging emotional and psychological issues. It's challenging and extremely rewarding.

What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to seek help for their mental health issues?

If you are hesitant to seek help for your mental health, please know that genuine and effective support is available. Taking that first step to seek help is a sign of strength, not weakness. It's important to acknowledge your emotions and effectively deal with them. Mental health professionals are trained to provide compassionate and confidential care tailored to your unique needs. The challenges you are facing are not permanent; with the right support, you can overcome them and find a path to healing and growth.

Remember, you don't have to go through this alone. Seeking help can provide you with tools and strategies to manage your feelings and improve your well-being. Mental health issues are common, and seeking help is a positive and proactive step towards a healthier and more fulfilling life. Don't let fear or stigma hold you back; reaching out for support can make a significant difference. You deserve to feel better, and with the right help, you can achieve that and much more. HELP IS AVAILABLE; HELP IS CERTAIN.
