Can you tell us about your
professional journey?
I am a teacher by choice, not by chance. To describe my journey, I have written a poem, which I would like to share here:
My journey as a teacher (transformation journey) so far…..
- Dr. Anupama K Malagi
Joined the teaching profession by choice not chance,
Thought it would be a life where I
could sing and dance,
Realised later that it was nothing
but a rigorous penance,
A stage where I had to take a firm
stance.
As hours turned into days and days
turned into years,
There were many a times when my eyes
had tears,
For the reason that my students had
lot to ask not just cheers,
A stage where I had to network with
my peers.
As years rolled by and made me
ponder with every blink,
About the purpose of my very
profession, I would think,
Soon I started my tough journey with
my pen and ink,
A stage where I had to study without
a wink.
Soon, reached a milestone where I
got to be called as Doctor,
To realise soon, it meant a lot to
work for education sector,
To teach the students, guide them
and be their proctor
A stage where I had to work beyond
being a lector.
The journey has seen me through many
ups and downs,
From days when I was happy with
students here from different towns,
Would laugh and talk and teach with
the customary frown,
A stage where I felt I had my head
with the crown.
Then came in teachers life ,the most
unexpected twist,
When I had to learn the art of
teaching online without further desist,
Talking, teaching holding students’
attention, not to miss their attendance list,
A stage where I had upgraded myself
without clenching my fist.
This is the life of a teacher like
the beginning of a brook,
A complete change not just in the
book, but also in the look,
At every step inhibitions to learn
are shook,
A stage where I focus on keeping the
students on a learning hook.
The journey continues……….
How do you approach mentoring
students?
Life is filled with unpredictable events that make the young students feel anxious about the next step. The deciding event could be their next academic step or their next career lead. They encounter these risky moments and feel the need to reach out to someone who can guide them and overcome the uncertainty. These huge steps incur changes, demands, risks, and high stakes. That’s when the mentor’s role becomes significant. Being a Certified Behavioural and Mentoring Analyst (CBMA), I mentor and guide the students not only in their professional lives but also in their personal lives. This has been possible because of my listening skills, leadership skills, and the ability to inspire the students towards achieving their goals.

Could you describe a recent project
or publication you’re particularly proud of?
One project that is very close to my heart is the study on malnutrition among women construction workers in Bangalore, which I have carried out recently. This was taken up because study on women's health is a neglected area, especially in the unorganized sector. The objective of this study is to understand the extent of malnutrition prevalent among women construction workers and the factors leading to it.
The findings of this study will be submitted to the construction board, and subsequently, a study of greater magnitude will be undertaken.
How is the job market in our field
of study currently?
The job market at present is extremely competitive. There is no place for mediocrity. Hence, job aspirants have to be willing to upskill and reskill themselves in accordance with the emerging job market.
