Dr. Priyesh P. Gandhi, Provost, Sigma University

Dr. Priyesh P. Gandhi is currently serving as the Provost (Vice Chancellor) of Sigma University, Vadodara, Gujarat, India. With 20 years of extensive academic and industrial experience, he is a strong advocate for integrating technology into the teaching-learning process and day-to-day administration. He holds a Ph.D. and an M.Tech (Gold Medalist) in VLSI Design from Nirma University, Ahmedabad, and a B.E. in Electronics and Communication from Government Engineering College, Modasa. 


Could you tell us about your educational and professional journey?

I am currently serving as the Provost (Vice Chancellor) of Sigma University, Vadodara, where I played a pivotal role in establishing the university, developing comprehensive academic regulations, and fostering international collaborations. Prior to this, I was the principal of Sigma Institute of Engineering, where I was responsible for academic administration and the approval of new courses and programs. My professional journey also includes significant roles as Associate Dean at Gujarat Technological University, General Manager at Prakruti Consultancy Services, and various academic positions at LaljibhaiChaturbhai Institute of Technology. Throughout my career, I have consistently demonstrated expertise in regulatory compliance, academic governance, and leadership in higher education.


What are your current roles and responsibilities as the Provost of Sigma University Vadodara?

As the Provost of Sigma University, Vadodara, my primary role is to provide academic and administrative leadership to achieve the university's vision and mission.

Allow me to highlight some of the notable achievements of Sigma University over the past year:

  1. Strategic Collaborations: We have established over 40 strategic partnerships with industries and universities, both nationally and internationally. A notable collaboration is our MOU with Zydex Industries P. Ltd., which has enabled the introduction of specialized programs in civil engineering (construction technology) with lucrative stipends for students.
  2. International Engagements: Our partnership with the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Turiba University Lativa, and Universitas Amikom Yogyakarta underscores our commitment to global excellence. Several of our students and faculty members have participated in an immersive program at AIT Bangkok, enriching their academic and cultural experiences.
  3. Infrastructure Development: In line with our commitment to providing world-class facilities, we have inaugurated new infrastructure for various faculties, including hospitality and tourism, design, and science, enhancing the learning environment for our students and faculty members.
  4. Corporate Social Responsibility: Through collaborations with esteemed organizations like Shaily Plastic Engineering P. Ltd., we have established the Shaily Sigma Incubation Centre, equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure to nurture innovation and entrepreneurship among our students.
  5. Support for Startups: Our recent partnership with Savli Technology & Business Incubator exemplifies our dedication to fostering a conducive ecosystem for startups, providing young minds with the resources and mentorship needed to transform their ideas into reality.

Looking ahead, we are aligning with the vision outlined in the National Education Policy 2020 and have outlined five key initiatives that will shape the future trajectory of Sigma University:

  • Curriculum Enhancement: We will revamp our curriculum to incorporate interdisciplinary approaches, skill development, and experiential learning, ensuring our graduates are equipped to meet the dynamic demands of the global workforce.

  • Technology Integration: Embracing emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and data analytics will be integral to enhancing teaching, learning, and administrative processes across the university.
  • Community Engagement: Strengthening our engagement with local communities and industries will be emphasized, with a focus on leveraging our expertise and resources for the socio-economic development of the region.


What are your primary areas of expertise, and how have they influenced your contributions?

As an engineer with a background in electronics, my primary areas of expertise lie in VLSI design/semiconductor, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. These technical domains have significantly influenced my career as both an academician and an administrator.

In my role as a teacher, I have focused on advancing knowledge in these cutting-edge fields. As an administrator, my expertise extends to academic administration, policy making and execution, people management and leadership, industrial and international collaboration, and research. My strong decision-making skills have not only advanced my career but have also positively impacted the people working with me and the organizations I have served. My contributions in these areas have fostered an environment of growth and innovation, benefiting the university and the broader academic and professional community.



What inspired you to pursue a career in education, and what motivates you to continue making a difference in this field?


My inspiration to pursue a career in education stems from the profound influence teachers have had on my life. Throughout my journey, I have witnessed firsthand the crucial and decisive role educators play in shaping not only an individual's future but also the broader course of society. I strongly believe that education possesses the power to transform lives, creating a ripple effect that extends beyond the individual to impact entire communities and, ultimately, humanity as a whole. This belief motivates me every day to continue striving for excellence in the field of education, with the hope of making a lasting difference.



How do you balance administrative responsibilities with academic leadership as the provost of Sigma University?


As the provost of Sigma University, I believe it is essential to set the highest standards of quality and expectations, beginning with myself. By holding myself to the highest benchmarks of ethics and integrity, I aim to lead by example, creating a culture of excellence that permeates every aspect of the university. I actively promote best practices among all stakeholders, fostering an environment where each member of the university community is encouraged to strive for continuous improvement. Balancing my administrative responsibilities with academic leadership requires a commitment to these principles, ensuring that our collective efforts contribute to the university's sustained success and positive impact on society.



What advice would you offer to students who are preparing for their careers, particularly those aspiring to excel in engineering and technology fields?


My advice to aspiring students, particularly those preparing for careers in engineering and technology, is to embrace the mindset of lifelong learning. In a field where advancements occur rapidly, it is crucial to be adaptable and ready to integrate new skills and knowledge. Cultivate the ability to unlearn, learn, and relearn, as this will be essential in navigating the ever-evolving landscape of technology.


Maintain high moral standards, ethics, and empathy for those around you, as these qualities are foundational to your personal and professional growth. Additionally, be mindful of distractions, such as excessive use of social media and other addictions, as they can hinder your focus and productivity.


Remember, every failure is a stepping stone to success.
