Inspiration

Since Dr. Asma Farooque belongs to the family of bureaucrats, her preference and inclination were towards joining Judicial Services like her father and maternal grandfather. But God had another plan for her, and she started teaching in 2002 to aspirants for judicial services. She received positive feedback for the lectures delivered, which was an eye opener for her teaching skills. Gradually, she joined Integral University, and it has been a long journey. She was privileged to have the opportunity to work as Head of the Department in two different tenures. Dr. Farooque has been closely associated with the accreditation work of the NBA & NAAC. She had a chance to work in multifarious roles like Incubation Manager, Member of the Women Study Centre, Member of HRDC, Examination Committee, Board of Studies, & Faculty Board, etc. At present, she is a professor with teaching & research responsibilities. She is also the coordinator of DQAC and Managing Editor of IRJM published by the department.

Areas of Expertise

Since Masters in Business Administration is a programme where a student reads 30-32 subjects of different domains, developing expertise is not an easy task. However, as an academician, Dr. Asma Farooque has developed a better understanding of subjects like Integrated Marketing Communication, Retail Management, Consumer Behaviour, and Organizational Behaviour (OB). But in a world where knowledge is getting updated in nanoseconds, becoming an expert is a misnomer.

Memorable Moments and Recognitions

There are several moments that made Dr. Asma Farooque feel satiated and elated about being a teacher. Sometimes passed-out students reach out to her, telling her that some of her teachings and preachings in the class helped them in their jobs. Few of them had some misunderstandings with their family, and her guidance and mentoring helped them break the shackles and they had a good relationship with their parents later on. A very shy student of MBA was counseled by her to overcome his hesitation and nervousness, and by God's grace, he is well settled in Dubai.

Guru-Shishya Tradition in Teaching Practice

Integrating the Guru-Shishya tradition into modern teaching methods is a meaningful way to blend the rich, mentor-disciple relationship of ancient Indian pedagogy with today's evolving academic environment. At the core of the Guru-Shishya tradition is a deep, personal bond between the teacher (Guru) and student (Shishya). Dr. Asma Farooque believes this can be applied today by offering personalized mentorship, where the teacher actively nurtures the intellectual, emotional, and moral growth of students. Regular one-on-one sessions, discussions on career goals, and personalized feedback can foster this connection.

The Guru-Shishya tradition emphasized dialogue, reflection, and critical thinking. According to Dr. Farooque, a modern-day equivalent is Socratic questioning or inquiry-based learning, where the teacher encourages students to ask questions, critically analyze information, and engage in discussions. This leads to a deeper understanding of concepts rather than rote learning.
