I am Dr. Shrikant Sitaram Jahagirdar, a distinguished academic and professional in the field of Civil and Environmental engineering, currently serving as a Professor and the Dean of Research and Development at N.K. Orchid College of Engineering and Technology (NKOCET) in Solapur, Maharashtra, India. With over 22 years of extensive experience in academia and research, I have made significant contributions to engineering education, research innovation, and environmental sustainability. I am passionate about developing sustainable solutions and have a strong background in both teaching and environmental consulting.
 
 
Could you take us through your educational and professional journey, emphasizing key milestones that have shaped your career?
 
My educational journey began with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the Walchand Institute of Technology, where I achieved the first rank at the university level. I then pursued a Master's in Environmental Engineering from Walchand College of Engineering, securing a distinction and topping my class. In 2015, I completed my PhD in Civil Engineering with a specialization in environmental studies at NITK Surathkal.
 
Professionally, I started my career as a lecturer and progressively advanced to higher positions, such as senior lecturer, assistant professor, associate professor, and finally professor in Civil Engineering. Since 2015, I have served as the Head of the Civil Engineering Department, and since 2018, I have been the Dean of Research and Development at N.K. Orchid College of Engineering and Technology, Solapur.
 
 
What are your current responsibilities and roles at N.K. Orchid College of Engineering and Technology?
 
Currently, I am a Professor in Civil Engineering and the Dean of Research and Development at N.K. Orchid College of Engineering and Technology. My responsibilities include overseeing the Civil Engineering Department, guiding and mentoring students and faculty in research activities, coordinating research projects, and securing research grants. Additionally, I contribute to curriculum development and quality assurance processes, ensuring the department maintains high standards in education and research.
 
 
What are your core areas of expertise and skills in teaching and research?
 
My core areas of expertise include environmental engineering, waste management, water quality assessment, and sustainable construction materials. I have a strong foundation in Civil Engineering principles and a passion for environmental protection, which drives my research in topics like the reuse of industrial waste in construction materials, air and water pollution control, and sustainable development. I have published several books and numerous research papers in reputed journals, contributing to the body of knowledge in civil and environmental engineering. My research efforts focused on environmental optimization, sustainable materials, and air quality monitoring, which demonstrate my dedication to addressing critical environmental challenges.
 
 
What motivated you to pursue a career in academia and environmental consulting?
 
My motivation to pursue a career in academia stems from my desire to share knowledge and inspire the next generation of engineers. I have always been fascinated by the impact of engineering solutions on society, particularly in the context of environmental sustainability. Combining my technical expertise with teaching allows me to contribute to both academia and the community, driving positive change through research, innovation, and education.
 
 
Could you share some of the achievements and publications you have accomplished during your career?
 
Throughout my career, I have authored and co-authored several books, such as "Foundation Engineering," "Basic Civil Engineering," "Environmental Engineering," and "Waste Water Engineering." I have also published over a dozen research papers in international and national journals, covering topics like the reuse of industrial sludge in construction materials, water quality assessment, and sustainable building practices. Additionally, I have been involved in multiple research projects funded by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, IIT Bombay, and other prestigious institutions, securing over 2 crores in research funding.
 
 
How do you stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in engineering and environmental studies?
 
I actively participate in seminars, workshops, and certification programs, such as those organized by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), AICTE, and IITs. I also regularly attend national and international conferences and engage in continuous professional development activities. As a member of several professional bodies like ISTE, ISRMTT, and the Institution of Engineers, I stay connected with industry experts and researchers, allowing me to stay abreast of the latest trends and innovations in my field.
