Vaasawa Sharma, Assistant Professor, IILM University

Could you introduce yourself to our audience?

Hi everyone, this is Vaasawa Sharma. I teach law graduates at IILM University, Gurugram. My core area of expertise is corporate law and Intellectual Property Rights. I am an academician, scholar, or specialist who loves to get deeply involved in academic work. I like to teach the young generation and inspire the youth of the country. Our young lawyers are just fabulous.

Could you walk us through your educational and professional journey and how it has shaped your career in law?

To frame the career in academics is very difficult, struggling as well as time-consuming. You have to study for lifetime and in a subject like law, we have to be updated with the new laws and regulations. I had an interest in law since my childhood; therefore, I completed my graduation and post-graduation in law with expertise in Corporate Law. I worked in a law firm also, dealt with multiple clients and got exposure to the practicality of law. There, I came to know that law does not exist in the books only; rather, the application is totally different. Then, after gaining the expertise of law in industry, I switched into academics and thought of doing the research in law. I have written many blogs and articles for various websites and e-libraries. Many international journals included me as their editorial Board Member and Reviewer. It’s fun to review the articles written by lawyers and academicians. I enrich my knowledge by reviewing the articles and manuscripts. As far as my journey is good, yet many good things are awaited!!

What specific areas of law do you specialize in and how did you develop interest in these areas of expertise?

Specifically, I am specialized in Intellectual Property Law and Corporate Law. Today, we are at the stage of developing. The economy of the nation largely depends on IPRS. We need new innovations in the form of patents, trademarks, and copyrights as well in order to contribute towards economic development. I had an interest in the new and innovative technologies emerging day by day; that is why I chose IPRs as my research topic.

As an Assistant Professor at IILM University, what are your current roles and responsibilities, both in teaching and research?

It includes teaching, conducting research, publishing scholarly articles or books, and contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field of law. We often mentor students, engage in academic conferences, and may hold administrative roles such as department heads or deans. Our work is focused on intellectual exploration, shaping the future of their discipline, and contributing to the education of future lawyers.

What motivated you to pursue a career in law, and how has your academic journey influenced your teaching methodology?

The major motivation behind choosing law is my family of lawyers. Also, it is a great profession because we, as lawyers, fight for justice and we play a key role in maintaining social welfare. Also, it is a noble and dignified profession.

How do you manage to balance your personal and professional responsibilities effectively?

Prioritization of tasks is one of the major aspects that is to be considered for maintaining work-life balance. I use tools like to-do lists or time-blocking to focus on high-priority tasks. This helps me to manage the time efficiently, reducing unnecessary stress. Also, protect your personal time by creating boundaries for family, friends, hobbies, and self-care. In addition to this, focus on yourself rather than wasting your time on digital devices. Take time to rest and rejuvenate; this will increase your productivity. Achieving work-life balance takes continuous effort, but practicing these strategies consistently will help you create a healthier, more fulfilling life.

How do you mentor students interested in legal research, and what advice do you give to those aspiring to contribute to legal academia?

Students are keen now a days; they not only focus on the lecture delivered in the classroom but also are interested in gaining overall knowledge about law. I always motivate them to write on contemporary legal issues. It can be a blog, an article, or a research paper. I often refer to my papers and blogs to study and gain ideas on legal writing. Being a lawyer, one must possess excellent writing skills with clarity and precision. I advise the students to write on the issue that can bring a change in society and create awareness among people.
